Tom Reinert – Advocate for Dark Skies & Astronomy Enthusiast
Tom Reinert is a retired Washington, D.C. attorney with a distinguished career representing airlines and railroads in labor and employment law. With extensive experience bridging the gap between scientific experts and lay decision-makers, Tom honed his ability to translate complex technical information into actionable policy. He holds degrees from Harvard College and Harvard Law School.
Beyond the courtroom, Tom has been deeply engaged in environmental activism, dedicating a decade to fighting water pollution with local riverkeeper organizations on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. However, his passion for astronomy was rekindled in 2013 when he saw the Andromeda Galaxy with the naked eye from Kitt Peak, inspiring him to combat light pollution and preserve dark skies.
Currently residing in Northern Virginia, Tom and his wife, Chris, are avid travelers, often venturing across the Western United States in search of pristine dark sky locations. His commitment to preserving the night sky led him to volunteer with the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), where he has played a key role in legal and public policy advocacy at the national level.
Today, Tom continues to champion dark sky preservation, sharing his expertise and passion with the astronomy community, ensuring future generations can experience the awe-inspiring beauty of an unpolluted night sky.
