Another step out in distance brings us to a pair of beautiful galaxies gracefully dancing through space together. In Ursa Major, the Big Dipper (Plough), M81 and M82 form a spiral galaxy and a strange, distorted object that are tugging on each other by gravity. Telescopes are time machines, because photons striking our eyes move at the finite speed of light. So we are seeing objects like these galaxies as they appeared 12 million years ago, long before our ancestors walked on Earth.
